Abstract

This paper examines pre-service teachers’ portraits of a significant teacher who influenced their decision to enter the teaching profession. Pre-service teachers recorded and edited a short video in which they described a memorable teacher and their characteristics, practices, and personal traits. Video analysis was conducted on over 800 digital videos to determine dominant themes emerging as a result of qualitative artifact analysis. Preliminary analysis suggests that many key characteristics of memorable and significant teachers reside in the affective domain and relate to the ethic of care (Noddings, 1984). Other themes resulting from the analysis include passion for learning and content and the ability to evoke these qualities in students. Further analysis will refine these themes and collapse or split them into clusters as appropriate. Implications for teacher education practice will be offered as will the effective use of video for reflection on practice by pre-service teachers.
