Abstract
We explore two interrelated constructs that explicate students’ social experience in online learning. First, we compare levels of learning activity across levels of social ability scores. Second, we explore the relationships between individual student characteristics and their social experience in online learning environments. Our analysis incorporates responses to social ability surveys (Yang, Tsai, Cho, Kim, & Laffey, 2006) and recording of raw participation levels using trace data from a Context-aware Activity Notification System (CANS). A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) reveals no significant difference between high and low social ability groups on students’ raw participation on four types of learning activities. Canonical correlation analysis, however, indicates that individuals’ characteristic factors are associated with social experience factors in Social Ability. Further studies are needed to investigate what activities and behaviors influence participation level and what factors influence students’ willingness to share personal information.
