Abstract

This work presents the results obtained from a study performed with primary and secondary school students and teachers in Chile. It was sought to identify the areas and expressions of gender differences regarding the use, access, skills and representations of ICT in education, using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The results show that, in general, there are no differences in terms of access and use of ICT. The gender specific differences are present in the knowledge of specialized digital tools, modalities of use, and the perception and value assigned to ICT. The students use ICT frequently and on a massive scale; boys and girls have similar levels of knowledge regarding productivity and Internet tools, but differ in their knowledge of specialized tools. There are also differing practices regarding the use of ICT between boys and girls, in which videogames are more associated to use by boys, while communication and social networks are more closely associated with use by girls.
