Educators, linguists, and anthropologists recognize that language reflects societal values, culture, and attitudes of the country where the language is spoken. The use of technology provides numerous activities where students can learn about the values, culture, and lifestyles of people living in other countries. This paper examines the role of teachers and assessment methodologies for a project that used technology to increase intercultural understanding and awareness of first year Foreign Language, English majors at Osaka Gakuin University (OGU). Oral Communication students used various media such as videoconferences, Skype, Facebook, e-mail, and electronic portfolios to communicate with people living abroad, develop a better understanding of other cultures, and write reflections of their experiences. This paper describes learning activities to prepare students for using technology, examines learning styles related to the use of technology, provides observations about technology use, and describes changes in students' intercultural sensitivity over one year.
