Utilizing Storytelling as an Instructional Element in Higher Education

Utilizing storytelling as an instructional element refers to have learners in a small group engaged in story-making in order to learn and understand some unfamiliar theories, ideas or concepts from a textbook, and to have them understood through learner’s presentation in the classroom. This article describes the development of class by using storytelling as an ‘instructional element’, the students response to it, issues encountered and lesson learned. To do this, a class in a university in Korea, targeting post-graduate students was observed through a semester. Interview and survey were conducted.As findings for this study as interim conclusion, there are four instructional issues in terms of learning and teaching process and analyzed as follows: i) features in learning process, ii) effectiveness on learning outcome, iii) changed viewpoints of characters-taking perspectives, and iv) interaction among group members as a learning community
