Abstract

This paper explores the use of eUreka, an online project work management system in NTU, in academic writing context. Introduced in Sep 2004, eUreka was primarily designed to automate and document the formal project process (eg. final year projects. eUreka has also been used to facilitate group assignment (via project-based learning approach) in an English language academic writing course, HW102: The Art of Academic Writing. eUreka supports Vygotsky’s learning philosophy based on regulation of self, regulation by others and regulation of objects. The Web 2.0 tools (eg. Weblogs) provide the scaffold to develop students’ writing skills as well as opportunities for social networking and online collaboration. The feedback surveys showed that the use of web 2.0 technologies in writing instruction motivates students as it places writing tasks in the comfort zone of this IT savvy generation.
