The inclusion of cameras and GPS devices in today’s modern mobile devices has dramatically changed the landscape for mobile application development. Interactions with the physical environment include location-based services such as time- and place-relevant marketing or advertising and more recently, teaching and learning. This paper describes the initial stage of a project for building a comprehensive framework to experiment with the burgeoning field of location-based teaching and learning. A prototype named Geo-Terra that allows for location-based learning using geo-tagged multimedia is presented. The enabling technologies for location-based services and the various teaching paradigms are also overviewed in this paper.
