Avatar technology and Metaverse architectures are universally accepted and deploy-able on multiple platforms, including the Internet. However, factors relating to cognition, presence, performance, stability, and compatibility with media and networked file systems present issues that can negatively affect the experience for online learners. Although some issues may disappear in time as educators gain more experience in adapting the technology within online learning systems and situations, disadvantages will always remain as technology improves or changes. Taken from specific literature to date, this paper provides a brief review of past efforts towards adaptation of avatar and Metaverse technologies for online learning, as well as a basis for an alternative approach towards more universally adaptable standards.
