Abstract

D'Youville College is a medium sized ( three thousand students) college, located in Buffalo, NY, in transition to becoming a university. As most similar institutions, it has a Distance Education department which helps instructors runs full and partial internet courses based primarily on Blackboard , a proprietary course management software package. Recently, economic pressures have led the institution to consider “open source” alternatives such as Moodle.
