C2PRISM: A Transformative Role for Assessment PROCEEDINGS

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to conduct a GK-12 STEM project that places doctoral students into high school math and science classes in Newark, NJ. C2PRISM Fellows serve as scientist-mentors who explain how their research projects and methodologies contain fundamental science and math concepts that the high school students are studying. This paper provides a narrative of the transformations that the assessment protocols of the project have undergone over the past three years – from the original proposal's anticipated activities through the first two years of actual funded activity. Our objective is to add to the growing literature on assessment and evaluation of collaborative education projects and thereby provide pragmatic suggestions for others engaged in similar endeavors. We believe that the new variable model we are creating holds the potential to allow fellow educational researchers to incorporate our evidence-based design into their own work.
