Connecting faculty, academic support staff, and students in an online environment creates unique challenges. Faculty members accustomed to brick-and-mortar university environments are often unprepared for the needs of online learners. The absence of face-to-face instruction leaves many teachers bereft of the instructional tools necessary to accelerate skill acquisition. Online learners are acclimated to on the ground learning also. Virtual classroom acclimation must be dealt with through interaction between faculty and staff to enhance the student experience. A robust support system is essential in the e learning paradigm. Many online environments provide support staff, such as writing consultants and information literacy specialists, to help students succeed in programs. This session will introduce strategies for weaving a network of support necessary in the online academic community to enhance retention of quality faculty while addressing the needs of the online learner and aiding overall student success.
