Abstract

This study focused on evaluation of real-time video services for the continuing professional development of the Greek Academic Network’s technical staff. More specifically, two different real-time video services were compared – the videoconferencing and the live video broadcasting. A questionnaire was used to investigate the participants’ perceptions towards the six different dimensions, namely the instructional activities, instructor’s role, interaction, technology, visualization, and satisfaction. The findings of this study indicated that the videoconferencing was deemed more suitable to interactive teaching strategies such us be questioning, dialogue and discussions with the instructor and with their fellow classmates. On the other hand, well-organized lectures and the use of a variety of audiovisual material were critical to succeeding in the live video broadcasting lectures. The findings of this study also established some potential implications for the use of real-time video services in the distance learning environments.
