Computer-mediated communication technologies (CMC) enable organizations to operate globally, transcending spatial, temporal, and organizational boundaries. Global virtual teams represent an increasingly apparent characteristic of global organizations and their use of global talent. The literature on virtual teams encompasses group structure, technology, socio-emotional processes, task processes, performance, and culture. This article offers a review of previously published research and analyzes it in order to ascertain what areas require further inquiry. By process of review, comparison, and reflection this article offers a clear picture on how virtual teams select the communication medium for the task at hand and what factors influence this decision.
