Abstract

Mounting research evidence suggests that online victims of predation tend to be youth with troubles offline, such as poor relationships with parents, loneliness, and depression. In this presentation findings are shared from focus groups and surveys of youth with severe emotional disturbance who are receiving integrated services and supports through systems of care. The focus of the research was to determine the prevalence of problematic cyberactivity among at-risk youth and explore effective prevention strategies for engaging students in assessing risky situations, developing appropriate coping techniques, and practicing responsible decision making online.
