Abstract

Distance education is changing and the requirements of media production to support distance learning are changing with it. The author is a manager in the media production unit of The Open University in the UK. The shift in Open University learning materials from physical items (books, CD-ROMs and DVDs) to online learning has led to restructuring and re-skilling. The impact of Web 2.0 means this process must continue. Production specialists need to develop more generic skills to work in a wide range of media. New skills in learning media design have become more important. Managing these changes while continuing to deliver high-quality learning experiences to distance students on a national scale has been, and remains, a major management challenge. This brief paper outlines how The Open University has adapted to meet this challenge, and how it is positioning itself in the world of Web 2.0.
