Abstract

In fewer than twenty years, the mobile telephone, or cell phone, has transformed communications from rare, expensive equipment for the business elite to a pervasive, low-cost personal commodity. In many countries, cell phones outnumber land-line telephones. In the U.S., 50 percent of children have cell phones and for many households, it has supplanted the land-line telephone. In December 1993, the Short Message Service (SMS) text message was transmitted in Finland. Text messaging has now become the most widely-used form of communication, exceeding voice and even email. As SMS usage continues to grow worldwide, Gartner, Inc. forecasts 2.3 trillion SMS will be sent in 2008, a 20% increase from only last year. Text messaging revenue is expected to increase 16 percent in 2008 to over $60 billion (Gartner, 2008).
