Abstract

The K-Space DentMed initiative represents the semantic contextual knowledge spaces of the upcoming Web 3.0 generation with the automatic annotation and information retrieval of multimedia content. This knowledge space of medicine supports the global and intercultural knowledge transfer and enhances the interdisciplinary research and education. K-Space DentMed is an example for generation and presentation of multilingual and multimedial dynamic knowledge spaces in dentistry for an intuitive task- and problem-orientated navigation and for education. In doing so, K-Space DentMed takes into account Web 2.0/3.0 features such as “wisdom of community,” semantic Web searches, an increasing tendency toward Life Long Learning and the AAA Imperative (anything, anywhere, anytime), and related media convergence strategies from a mono-media market to a poly-medial space. The methodology of K-Space DentMed with its structure of knowledge elements and objects is scalable to all scientific disciplines. The results of evaluation in the beta test are significantly positive.
