Abstract

The professional development program described in this paper is funded by a U.S. Department of Education Title II Part A (3) Improving Teacher Quality grant. The first phase of the two year program is in progress. The program design is informed by research on social studies education, teacher education, teacher learning, and professional development. Integral to the program design is the use of various technologies for collaboration, curriculum design, teacher research, online learning, and classroom based pedagogical applications designed to enhance student learning. Research on the project will examine teachers' response to the professional development program, including change in teaching practices and teachers' response to the face-to-face and technology mediated environment in which the program is situated.
