Abstract

This paper describes how teacher educators joined forces to provide teacher candidates with various learning strategies that extended outside the boundaries of individual course curricula, kept the content of the assignments interesting and relevant to the courses, provided an outreach component to local public schools, while generating a resource for other students and teachers. Outside interest in the project was generated when educators integrated technology with subject matter. This paper identifies ten themes that should be infused into a social studies curriculum and six standards for applying technology in educational settings. Both social studies themes and standards for applying technology were incorporated into hands on project assignments, which included a focus on inquiry, decision-making, creativity, and critical thinking. As a result of this process, teacher candidates planned, created, and presented their products as a part of a learning community, and in the process developed an Internet based resource.
