Abstract

College of Education at Shinshu University provides English teachers in Nagano with a series of professional development seminars on effective English teaching. This project comes under the support of the "Professional Development Workshop for English Teaching" funded by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). We need to develop the professional teaching standards for English teachers in order to assess the effect of the project and develop participants' teaching portfolios. In our presentation, we will overview the seven-month consecutive seminars, compare several professional teaching standards for English teachers in Japan and the U.S., and propose a digital teaching portfolios system with tentative professional teaching standards for English teachers in Nagano.
