Do Mathematics in English! : Result from Activities that Japanese Students Tackled Problems Written in English

This research involved 35 high school students in Japan who tackled mathematics problems written in English. This activity has three steps. The first step was to translate the problems into Japanese. The second step was solving the problem using a worksheet where they organize and write their ideas. The third step was that they presented their solution to the problems to fellow students and teachers. After that, they also answered questions and received advice from teachers. Students' comments in the worksheets showed the difficulty of interpreting the problems written in English because they had a limited knowledge of English vocabulary. After the activities were completed, the students answered a questionnaire. The responses from the questionnaire showed that these activities encouraged the students to reflect on the importance of intelligible presentation and the instrumental motivation to learning English especially while they learned various things from the series of activities.
