Online courses have become common and are a rapidly growing area, but how online instruction applies to learning a foreign language, the characteristics of quality online language instruction and the role of interaction in online foreign language learning are still being explored (Don 2005). Although there have been numerous studies of and theories about interaction, which is a key factor in language learning, its nature in an online environment is not yet fully understood. This paper examines and blends theories of interaction in four areas that are relevant to Web-based foreign language learning: foreign language learning, second language acquisition, computer-assisted language learning and distance learning.
