The ratio of people with disabilities using the internet is about 80%, whereas the average of the population using the internet is only around 42%. Nowadays more and more webmasters reduce all kinds of barriers for a better accessibility to their content. Although instructions on how to achieve this in general already exist, nothing has yet focused on the special requirements for e-learning and respectively collaborative systems. This paper gives a short overview on known criteria for reducing barriers. Furthermore it describes how these can be adopted to improve accessibility in collaborative systems and how they can be meliorated and summarized for gaining a style guide. We used our resulting style guide to reduce barriers in a collaborative environment called open-sTeam which is available as open source.
