Undergraduate electrical engineering students well-versed in the academic concepts of their discipline also need to understand the detailed physical manufacturing processes required to actually build products. This necessitates physical labs that mimic actual industrial applications. Engineering teaching laboratories provide this service; however accompanying health and safety concerns, the use of highly calibrated equipment, and the need for experienced technicians to oversee the facilities, can strain the resources of most institutions; thereby limiting student access. The project undertaken here addresses this problem by providing interactive virtual pre-labs where students can view digital video demonstrations, engage in online practice, and receive feedback on their comprehension of the material prior to setting foot into the lab. The various phases in an integrated instructional design process are examined, from needs analysis, to design review, to content chunking, to media selection, to assessment measures.
