The paper at hand discusses the concept of a service-oriented architecture in comparison to existing integration approaches in educational technology, and presents benefits, risks and success factors of an implementation. Moreover, we introduce a terminology based development approach for service components, which permits a cost-efficient programming of services in consideration of high software quality objectives.
