Abstract

Forces are buffeting today's schools and institutions, impacting teachers' abilities in the classroom. Too many new teachers enter the classroom unprepared to make decisions and manage a classroom of 24-31 students, in part due to teacher preparation programs being disconnected from classroom practice. simSchool serves as a “virtual practicum” connecting the preservice student to practice before entering the classroom. In a compelling learning environment, players analyze student needs, make instructional decisions that attempt to meet those needs, and then see the impact of decisions. The audience will take a tour of simSchool - the decisions players have to make and the resulting impact on simStudents' learning; learn how our pilot faculty envision using simSchool in preservice courses; and engage in a conversation around questions such as, “Looking into the future, how might games and simulations reshape teaching, learning and the organization of educational institutions?”
