This paper explores the impact of touch screens in the teaching of mathematics in primary classrooms across Europe. We report on the initial progress of the Mathwrite project, whose main objective is the acquisition of experience in developing and implementing software using handwriting recognition and touch screens in the instruction of mathematics in elementary education. The interactive exercises are designed by a team of teachers from the Gennadios Elementary School, supervised by Dr C. N. Ragiadakos (Pedagogical Institute), the school of the Irish partner (Newtown National School, a rural school in Co. Loais, Ireland) supervised by its principal John Threadgold and Inishnet's ICT in Education researcher Dr. Bryn Holmes, and a public Cypriot school (Agios Antonios), supervised by Prof. C. P. Constantinou (University of Cyprus). The evaluation of the product is being undertaken by the Finish partner (Joensuu University) supervised by Prof. R. Aikonen.
