Abstract

How can technology help facilitate the achievement of key state goals, including equity and effective teacher preparation? Most states wrestle with these questions and others related to the integration of technology, even as they try to absorb the steady flow of new information about technology. This paper describes the work of the University of the State of New York's (USNY's) Council on Technology Policy and Practice, a group of twenty-five educators, librarians, technologists, and cultural institution representatives. This unique cross-organization assembly is responsible for making policy recommendations about technology to the New York's State Education Department (NYSED). By involving professionals who are able to inform state education policy makers and to provide advice about technology decisions the state must make, the Council represents an innovative development in technology distributed leadership at the state level.
