Confessions of an Online Teacher: Rubrics are a GameChanger!

Anyone who has ever taught online (and this includes almost every educator this year), comprehends the increased workload associated with teaching in a remote environment. Face-to-face teaching involves similar preparation (if accomplished effectively) to the online space. However, the similarities diverge with appropriate levels of communication and continual assessment necessary for a successful online experience. Asynchronous domains often lack the constant vicarious feedback all who attend receive. That absence usually requires a great deal of effort to overcome. As an educator who has taught exclusively online for several years, I would like to share some of what I have learned about the role rubrics can play when teaching online. There are many pedagogies utilized in the online world outside of traditional quizzes and tests. Discussions, reflections, papers, and multimedia projects are deployed more often in online classes. The session will contain a list of hints, tips, and general information about how to construct and utilize the various types of rubrics. Rubrics come in many shapes and sizes. Discussion, group work, and project rubrics will be discussed in detail. The use of rubrics with younger learners will also be addressed.
