Community building as basis for fostering Teaching & Learning innovation - 18 years of project funding

For the last 18 years, our university has funded a wide range of Teaching and Learning (T&L) projects put forward by its faculty members. More than 250 projects have been approved and conducted so far. Many of them have helped to transform teaching practices not only in individual courses but also more widely in the institution. Roughly two thirds of all finished projects still or partly exist today, even though sustainability is not a key criterion in the approval process. Networking and exchange of project findings is facilitated through centrally organised activities like an annual exchange event and monthly lunch seminars and have become important success factors for sustainability. These activities follow the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning approach where faculty learn from faculty who are directly involved in teaching innovation (as opposed to educational developers). As a result, a strong T&L innovation community has developed at our university. This paper presents the findings of an analysis of the institutional funding mechanism, project sustainability and community building activities which are seen as part of an iterative fostering cycle as well as a short discussion of potential developments for the future.
