Abstract

Technology proliferates a range of modes and media by which we communicate today. As an exemplar, social media provides a platform for people to express their ideas and experiences of the world through their creation and participation. Internationally, there is a burgeoning demand and supply of digital stories; in part due to the ease of access to technology, but more importantly, these digital stories contain the latent, yet powerful ability in advocating causes and influencing people. Based on the new media literacy framework first proposed by Chen, Wu and Wang (2011) and refined by Lin et al. (2013), this paper proposes course design principles for fostering new media literacy using digital stories and social media. The design principles are translated into learning activities for a new graduate-level course launched in January 2019. The learning activities and the preliminary findings about this new media literacy course would be shared during the conference presentation.
