Abstract

Although students may learn about empathy in the didactic setting, this role-play experience integrates experiential learning. Students must assist simulated clients with diverse needs, limited financial resources, and special dietary needs in developing a meal plan and grocery list. Students go to a local supermarket and “shop” for groceries to determine if their plan fits the needs of the client. This article describes a hands-on activity aimed at increasing empathy for clients of vulnerable populations.
