Abstract

During the school year 2000–2001, the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus, the Department of Computer Science of the University of Cyprus and the bank of Cyprus implemented the first pilot program on distance learning in elementary schools of Cyprus, called “ODYSSEUS”. The objective of this paper is to present the evaluation methodology and discuss the most important results with regard to the learning effectiveness and social implications that were realised in the students of two elementary schools that participated in the program. The combination of the new educational technologies with the traditional learning pedagogical model, the aid of learning actions that cause interaction between the students into the virtual classroom and the appointment of school as the most important point of social integration, constitute the more important conclusions of this research.
