What Email Can Do for Foreign Language Writing

The rapid development of information and communication technologies in recent years is associated with a corresponding growth in interest in computer-mediated communication (CMC). Among asynchronous CMC, email communication has attracted more attention of researchers in the field of literacy and language learning. Based on the features of email communication and the possibility of exploring effects of email communication on writing, this paper will review studies which investigate writing involving email to see its potential in literacy and language learning. The literature involves the following parts: (1) non-threatening environment and active learning through email communication, (2) quantity of writing via email, (3) cultural issues in writing through email, (4) social interactions in writing through email, and (5) purposeful writing via email.
