Communication incorporating text based chat rooms with aural and webcam technologies are becoming a powerful means of supporting interactions in different virtual communities and distributed teams. The goal here is to understand interaction patterns in video-mediated virtual communities with a view to developing a model of social capital (SC) in virtual communities in general. In this paper we describe the research setting and present results drawn from one video-mediated virtual community. This is followed by a discussion of both the implications of these results for modelling SC as well as directions for our research.
