Abstract

PAUSE was created in 2001 to support novice teachers' professional development in a major district school board in Quebec, Canada. Novice teachers meet on regular basis in an online community of practice (CoP) designed to give the opportunity to discuss questions and preoccupations related to their daily practice. Teachers are encouraged to share experiences in order to support each other. They are also guided by four experienced teachers. In this paper, the project is presented and the point of view of novice teachers about PAUSE is reported. Results show that novice teachers valued their participation in PAUSE because it offers several advantages. They also underlined specific conditions that fostered engagement in this context of online CoP. Although they believe that PAUSE helps them grow as professionals, they still seek face-to-face support from colleagues and school principals.
