Abstract

Personal handheld mobile technology is quickly becoming more visible in K-12 classrooms. Personal handheld mobile devices offer many affordances to both formal and informal learning, however when these devices are present in the classroom, both teachers and parents play a role in ensuring that the devices do not create distractions which inhibit student learning. These devices, most commonly in the form of a smartphone, present unique opportunities and challenges in the classroom. Through a review of existing literature, this study seeks to draw attention to the importance of parent/teacher collaboration for managing personal handheld mobile devices in the classroom.
