Abstract

This paper presents initial findings from one section of a secondary education teacher preparation course that utilized a virtual reality software program as a clinical experience, giving teacher candidates the opportunity to practice using disciplinary literacy strategies with student avatars. Initial findings indicate some limitations regarding a heightened sense of anxiety among the teacher candidates, problematic situations related to technical difficulties, as well as carrying an expensive price tag. However, the virtual reality software did allow candidates to practice implementing disciplinary-specific literacy strategies to an live classroom audience without risking the loss of academic instructional time from an actual student. Additionally, teacher candidates were able to begin to develop theri identity as a teacher in both the physical and virtual space simultaneously.
