Adapt and They Shall Come: Aspects of Online Teacher-Parent Collaboration in 6 Case Studies with At-Risk Students

This paper describes a collateral finding from an educational intervention with at-risk primary school pupils in which parents were called to leverage teacher's adaptive teaching efforts for their children. Efficient communication and effective collaboration are prerequisites, but not given; and establishing them unsurprisingly required flexibility on the part of the teacher, flexibility which, perhaps unexpectedly, turned out to be sufficient. A participatory action research was conducted with parents of six at-risk students of primary education in the Republic of Cyprus, attending the same class in the fifth grade. The children had been identified to be at-risk using the official assessment tool employed by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Cyprus. All children came from a small size school in an underprivileged urban area. Initially, a special-purpose online platform (specifically designed for this purpose) was used for collaboration with parents as part of an educational intervention. Parents resisted the use of the special-built platform. At the second phase of the study, the focus of the research changed to the use of online platforms already in use by the parents. Parents complied completely, working closely with the teacher, with positive findings for students’ performance and changes to teacher-student, teacher-parent and parent-child collaboration.
