Abstract

The purpose of this mixed methods study to determine how social media affects the study abroad experience, and if students studying abroad experience Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). The students studying abroad took an online survey as well as participated in a focus group. From the data, participants used social media primarily for purposeful communication. Although the construct of FoMO was present in the study, it took on a different role. In addition, this study provides valuable information for those interested in harnessing social media to enhance and expand study abroad programs, as well as adds value to the current research on FoMO and its use as a motivator.
