Abstract

Since the early 2000s online or e-learning has become a multimillion dollar industry. In order to keep up with the growing demand and to help ensure learning and knowledge retention educators have tried to intertwine multiple-user virtual environments (MUVEs). The literature surrounding MUVEs and more specifically Second Life has been positive. MUVEs have been touted to increase the feelings of an online presence in the classroom, improved project-based learning, amplified motivation and participation, and augmented personal teaching efficacy. There has been a steep learning curve that needs to be addressed. The purpose of this paper is to outline a design that encourages pre-service teachers to use Second Life by providing guided modules and project-based instruction.
