Abstract

This paper outlines preliminary lessons from a University-based, student-driven, prototyping incubator for digital media projects. The Transmedia Zone at Ryerson University supports student learning and experimentation in storytelling and content-based innovation through a mentored prototyping process. Collaborative and cross-disciplinary teams develop their own ideas, timelines, and practical prototyping artifacts in an failure-tolerant environment. One cohort has been through the program, with plans and funding in place for continued operation at three cohorts per year over the next three years. Preliminary results show excellent results in terms of student motivation and learning; additional work is needed to support self-selected intake, skills-sharing across projects, and more flexible integration with competing time-commitments.
