Abstract
Case-based learning in the medical field involves the presentation of clinical cases as a means of learning basic medical and clinical science. In this paper, our proposed system, called HINTS (Health Information NeTwork System), combines WWW and CAI technologies to build a case-based educational environment for medical education through a problem-based learning approach. It is basically a multimedia medical teaching case system. It enables users to edit teaching cases and to browse the contents of the teaching case databases using a WWW browser. This paper includes a discussion of the system's operation from an end user's perspective, and describes the experiences gained from implementation of the system. We also discuss the principal underlying mechanisms which support various useful e-learning features of the system, including the mechanisms to support both synchronous and asynchronous discussions.
