Abstract

E-learning applications have strict real-time requirements. The server should be able to deliver not only textual data but also stream audio and video data in real-time to hundreds of the students. We propose a distributed multimedia file system that uses network-attached smart disks for e-learning applications. The proposed system will be scalable and real-time. It consists of a lightweight engine and a set of network attached smart disks or Network Attached Disk (NASD) that are connected to the network. We out line algorithms for read and write operations. We also show how we can guarantee the real-time requirements of the audio-visual objects. This is part of ongoing research project on campus to develop e-learning activities to support our curriculum. The first phase of the design is already done. We are in a process to implement a prototype on Linux platform, which will be tested with our students at Zayed University.
