Abstract
Mission Matters: Policy, Practice, and Learning Systems: Abstract: The mission of a distance-education provider drives policy and practice relative to its learning management systems. Whether the provider is nonprofit, public, private, or for-profit, and regardless of its location, its mission and the audiences it seeks to reach will have a profound impact on choices of technology, dedication of resources to given technologies, and methods of implementation. Despite differences in mission, location, types of students to be served, and types of content to be delivered, there are still certain constants that prevail. Panelists representing a small American public college, a British for-profit provider, a South African research university, and a large European Open University, will compare and contrast various institutional missions and their effects on selection and implementation of learning systems and on product development, delivery, and outcomes.
