Implementing distributed learning at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

Distributed Learning (DL), or e-learning, comes in many forms and is changing the way we learn, design and deliver education. A review of the relevant literature revealed a high incidence of unsuccessful DL initiatives, primarily due to organizations starting first with the “e” (technology), and not the “learning”. The purpose of this study was to identify the key factors for successfully implementing enterprise-wide DL at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. The research was conducted as a case study and data collection included a review of archival material and relevant literature, an employee survey, and interviews with directors. Findings from the study revealed concerns about the organization's readiness for DL such as the lack of an organization-wide education vision and strategy, visible leadership and co-ordination in the area of education, a comprehensive implementation plan including change management strategies, and recognition and planning for a culture shift in the organization.
