Exploring Multimodal Virtual Environments for Learning Biochemistry Concepts

Past literature has reported benefits of applications of virtual reality (VR) in sciences education, especially in chemistry. This paper describes an ongoing research project to assess usefulness of multimodal VR to support biochemistry learning. A large wall projection screen is being used in biochemistry classes for visualizing stereo projections of graphical model of molecule DNA. The model will have embedded text and earcons (the mapping of information into musical sounds) that will serve to identify bases (the building blocks of DNA). We hypothesize that the presentation of auditory (earcons) and visual information will reinforce the students' learning of the bases. An initial usability evaluation was carried out with medicine students, where a DNA model was shown. Preliminary results shown ease of visualization of molecular structure, high preference and saliency of molecular information. More studies are needed to test the multimodality of the virtual environment, and its usefulness for learning.
