Abstract: This paper is a report on a research project conducted during a doctoral level Telecommunications and Networking class. This paper is summary of a study on the development of Communities of Practice, beginning with their inception in the corporate world, and continuing to the implementation of these communities in educational settings. Communities of Practice In addition, the paper details the use of intranets in closed communities, and the implications of these settings for communities of practice, both within and out of the educational setting. The human side of planning an intranet-based Community of Practice is discussed.
