Abstract

To fill the void in the study of effective use of computers and networks in learning Chinese as a foreign language, this paper documents the innovative use of online chat in a WebCT-enhanced elementary Chinese language class at college level. We will introduce online chats as an effective tool in accelerating students' Chinese language learning process. We will also demonstrate online chats as a solution to the problem of the separated instruction of Chinese written forms and sound systems. In so doing, we hope to show how well communicative approach works in this network based language learning environment. Description of pedagogical innovations as well as implications for further work will also be provided.
