With the exponentially increasing number of daily emails between students and instructors and the growing use of virtual discussions in online courses, there is a distinct need to investigate how to structure and facilitate virtual communication. The authors of this paper will address the importance and learning value of virtual communication for students and instructors and propose tools for assessing effective discussions.
